CASH MOB ALERT: SUPPORT LOCAL, INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORE

My hometown independent bookstore, The Four-Eyed Frog, is having a Cash Mob today until 6PM PDT (9PM EDT). Joel, the owner, lost his wife Linda in a traffic accident in July and this is a great opportunity to support him, his family, and an amazing local bookstore.

Independent bookstores are such treasures and the Four-Eyed Frog Bookstore is very special and has been an integral part of my local community for years (and yes, I used to work there). You can find out more about them (and the Cash Mob) on their website here.

The First 70: Closing Parks In California

The state of California is set to close 70 state parks in an effort to save money (which is a bad idea in itself and probably won’t work). This means that thousands of acres of natural history and beauty will no longer be maintained.

But the parks will not be erased. Instead, they will just lose their protectors, left to rot and deteriorate. How will we save them from polluters now? From vandals? From fire? How will we preserve these unspoiled lands and the life they contain?

The First 70 is a film project to draw attention to this misguided effort. Visit their site to find out how you can see the film and what you can do to help.

This situation has been breaking my heart. California’s state parks hold so much majesty and beauty and wonder, and are such a unique resource for our state (both for Californians and for visitors from around the world). If closed, it doesn’t mean that they’ll return to some wild, unblemished state. It means, as mentioned in the video, that they’ll be vulnerable to vandalism, fires, mudslides, illegal marijuana farms, and worse. It’s not that they’re immune to such things now, but if left unchecked? This is going to have repercussions stretching far beyond whatever help these budget-bandaids will provide.
